Did you know Edit. Quotes Eiri : The most painful lesson one can learn is letting go, but everything in this world is connected and nothing's truly ever gone. Aside from Akira, this movie is highly disturbing and pretty bloody, not the movie best fit for those late night flicks. Nor is it for the naive minded who insist on pausing it every ten minutes asking what the hell is going on.
Patience and an open mind are suggested, no, are essential to accept this film for what it is, and to see the inner beauty within it. Never before in my life have I found a filmmaker who has an imagination so far from what is commonly known, even in anime standards. Trust me, I could ramble on for much longer, but I don't want to give away an spoilers. I was left completely blank of info about the film when I watched it, and I want to do the same favor for you.
It was still an odd experience after watching it to have your head up in and your mouth open in confusion, and having you head stare directly strait with your teeth chattering all at the same time.
Note: all what I said is true, but through various reasons I will probably never see this film again, if not ever. Details Edit. Release date April 11, Japan. Official site. Aniplex Studio Hibari. Technical specs Edit. The spirits of her objects sense this and take out their fury on the young man while friends who do not understand what is going on worry about his health and risk getting caught up in the spiritual machinations.
At some point the ghost must either resolve herself to what needs to be done or release her beloved and forsake her quest for freedom because the price is too high. The course of events over the first two episodes is fairly predictable, as the story borrows elements from numerous other supernatural tales, but the stylish presentation and dramatic visuals assures that the series does not get dull.
As the story progresses into the third episode a major twist comes about which may seem more like an inconsistency in storytelling and character portrayal until the full truth — which also reinforces Marcelo's motivation for killing his beloved — is revealed towards the end. It is here that the storytelling is at its freshest.
Since the story is almost entirely focused on Eiri and Cossette, secondary characters are left underdeveloped and underused; one of Eiri's female friends has great spiritual sensitivity, but inadequate use is made of her despite all the spiritual goings-on surrounding Eiri.
Fortunately Cossette is well-portrayed as the child who has matured greatly over the centuries of her imprisonment, while Eiri is convincing as the young man whose fascination with the image of a pretty girl becomes an obsession for which he'll endure even great suffering. The English dub , produced by Bang Zoom!
The English performance for Cossette is a little more playful than the Japanese performance but still feels right for the character, and Kevin Hatcher Kouta from Stellvia is an excellent fit for Eiri even though he was originally voiced by a woman.
Frustratingly, Geneon has returned to its old habit of listing only the actors in the credits and not the roles which they played, which makes it challenging to pick out who played what role unless you know your English VA voices really well. The English script stays pretty tight through the first two episodes but inexplicably rewrites some philosophical bits in a considerably looser third episode.
The changes do not detract from the story, however, so it should be a satisfying dub for anyone who is not a strict purist. Also look in the case for a reversible cover and double-sided mini-poster. Geneon has opted to show the original Japanese end credits for each episode, while the English credits are provided only after the end credits for the last episode.
Le Portrait de Petite Cossette is, ultimately, an artsy, stylish supernatural horror story about love and obsession. Its dramatic visuals, exceptional artistry, and sumptuous musical scoring make watching it quite an experience, and the story isn't half bad, either. It is very intensely graphic, so it is not a series for younger viewers or the faint at heart.
If Goth-Loli appeals to you, you're a fan of inventive artistry, or you're looking for something quite different in the realm of supernatural tales, then this title is definitely worth a look. Production Info:. RightStuf - Anime, Manga and More. Somewhat obscure in the U.

This series is animated by a little company called Wit Studio, maybe you've heard of them? The voice acting neither impressed nor annoyed me. The actual plot is fairly simple, but provides a decent backbone for the OVA. Character The characters are fairly shallow, and serve more as pawns in the overarching plot than actual human beings. Cossette, the title character, is the only one interesting enough to mention. However, even her appeal is more derived from how she is viewed by other characters than her actual development.
All in all, the characters are decidedly underdeveloped, and probably could have been done better. Overall Cossette no Shouzo, above all else, is a niche title. The entire OVA is designed with a certain target audience in mind, and the work will do little for those who fall outside this group. That said, I enjoyed the show a fair bit, and would recommend it to fans of the horror genre. Many of the more traditionally valued aspects of anime are discarded in favor of creating a decidedly gothic feel.
The result is a fairly abstract and bizarre work that lacks mainstream appeal, but which will most likely please those that enjoyed similar work like Requiem from the Darkness, Hitsuji no Uta, Pet Shop of Horrors, etc. While I would have loved to give this anime 10s across the board, I did have a few gripes with the way the story was told.
Animation: The art was top notch. At times, the art seemed so real, it was like watching an actual movie. Breathtaking animation which definitely contributed greatly to the story. Sound: The music was excellent. It matched the mood of this anime extremely well. It got my attention and certainly was a great yardstick to figure out the intensity of any given scene.
Story: Fascinating story. The soul of a girl being trapped in a glass Character: There weren't many characters to pay attention to, and they weren't developed enough across the 3 episodes. It would have been nice if the series was extended a few more episodes to make the characters more easily understood. After watching the series, I'm still a little lost about how the characters were feeling, etc.
Enjoyment: I definitely liked the anime, but would have enjoyed it more had I better understood the story. It will definitely help to watch it twice to catch the things that you missed the first time around. It is my habit to go straight to the point and I hope readers can forgive me if this review lacks the often poetic and fancy language found in other "professional" reviews.
One-Liner: Cossette is no drama or horror, it's more like a well done art film that conveys its ideas through imagery. The Good: 1 Music - Definitely top-notch music done by Yuki Kajiura, one of the most active and well known composers in the anime scene. Pieces are a perfect blend of ancient folk, techno bass and classical violin. It has the distinct 'Kajiura' sound that viewers who are familiar with her other works like Noir, Hack and Tsubasa chronicle will recognise.
BGMs deserves special attention here because Cossette is an art film where visual and sound are two essential components. BGMs invoke dark feelings and a certain sense of helplessness that complements perfectly with the story.
Its appeal stems mainly from the frequent use of symbolic apparitions to get its point across. Do not expect to see scary monsters popping behind for a cheap thrill, the "enemy" is an idea rather than an actual entity.
It may take a few re-runs before it makes sense. This three parter is something that grows in you as you learn to appreciate the subtlty. The voice actress managed to bring out the gentle and tragic side of Cossette behind her "devil" front that is displayed initially.
Even within the limited time span only 2 hours in total run time , the downfall of Eiri from a normal teenager to a deranged lunatic is convincingly played out. The Standard: 1 Animation - Unfortunately, the animation does not lift up to the standards of an art film. It's not lousy or anything the like, just nothing spectacular compared to all the plus points mentioned. Additional Notes: It is quite clear that this OVA is geared towards a more mature audience and younger viewers may well find the entire idea ridiculous and nonsensical.
Many events that transpired including the ending is open to interpretation and this may not sit well with some people who prefer a clear cut conclusion.
Verdict: Insanely fascinating. This one is likely to be one of those titles that a viewer will either loathe or love. Well for starters, the artistic level is very high - which, among other things, means plenty of unusual scene-cuts, a nonlinear narrative timeline and an unconventional charadesign.
On top of that, it plays on themes that might be a bit hard to stomach for some. Among those death and a never-carried-out but undeniably present lolita undertone. Basically the genre here is a composition of a 'gothic' background with its typically somber elements and the portrayal of a human's slowly degrading sanity - a mix thats equal parts unsettling and fascinating.
Sounds deterring to you? Well it can be, but know that unlike many other mysterious or 'chiffre' anime titles, this one is actually meant to be understood - which means it is quite possible to do so.
In other words, it takes a bit of concentration and observation, but unlike other titles you won't be required to delve into stuff like There are some experiments with unusual techniques and CG, but they are sufficiently skillfully implemented - resulting in a really well-orchestrated visual mix that conveys the gripping plot and deep atmosphere without being distracting or even annoying.
And yes, the facial designs are unusual to a certain degree, but it's nothing really deterring. Sound: Superb. I freely admit that I'm not much of a music fan, but the soundtrack of this one is so good that even I noticed it's drive and class.
Lots of mid-paced yet catchy choral pieces make this one a delight - and will probably make you look for the OST afterwards. Story: The main focus lies on the feelings of the main protagonist and his relationship towards Cossette, which, in turn, means that the story itself is not the most prominent element of this one. Surprisingly enough though, the plot's main concept is still fresh and fascinating.
Characters: Some complained that there are few characters and that the support cast is not fleshed out. Well, there's a simple reason for this: the narrative perspective of this one is almost exclusively Eiri's.
Meaning that you see what he sees and know what he knows. As a result, only Cossette and Eiri really get a fully-developed and well done character display, while the others are only briefly shown whenever Eiri encounters them.
Finishing line: People always tend to be a bit hesitant when it comes to watching animes designated as outright "mysterious". The reason for this is that doing so is usually a gamble on how well one grasps the plot during the first watch - which directly affects how much fun you have with it. Of course, this isn't entirely different when it comes to "Petit Cossette". Regardless, I got the impression that the producers succeeded in "getting the mix right" in this one, making it neither too shallow nor too hard.
Furthermore, even though the themes sound somewhat dark and controversial gothic love, sacrifice and a bit of rori , the surprising thing about this is that the resulting atmosphere is neither too necrophile nor too depressing nor perverted.
Instead, they actually serve to make the show a really unique and interesting watch. Of course this does not mean that everybody can like it - but even so, I urge anybody reading this review to at least give "Petit Cossette" a try. Since on one hand, you may find that it's not to your liking - but then you will only have wasted a mere 60 minutes of your time.
While on the other hand, chances aren't too bad that you might find a real jewel in this one. I for my part did. Note: be sure to grab a version with good subtitles.
