And no good credit hound! I can get that from gaming without any overclock. It's a problem with the driver. You should've been seeing artifacting prior to crashing if it was caused by the OC. Never saw any artifacts, never any problems with heat either. What happens with SETI on this machine is that the display will stall for about 5 to 8 seconds, and then there is a Windows popup on the bottom bar that says the driver has crashed.
Any software using that hardware doesn't really seem to. I get that message every now and then on my main system, when I run second life a lot. I'll get the "your video crashed but it's ok i fixed it" message from windows. Then I have to restart software like second life or paint shop pro that happen to be using the hardware when windows decided it was crashing. At least it's better then a hard lock. Then again I never hard problem with a video driver crashing until using vista Thats why it was odd I never saw that either and much better than the old BSD.
I will watch and see, my GTX is screaming thru the units now and still only 55C. I think windows is overly aggressive in the "crash recovery" of the video driver. I'd be willing to bet you have. If not, I know I certainly have experienced that. Part of the problem is that the video driver in all previous Windows releases were run in the kernel space known as Ring 0 zero. This is also the very same reason why installing a video driver required a reboot, because it was in the protected kernel space.
Windows Vista, and inherently also Windows 7 have moved the video driver to Ring 3, which is the user space. Now, instead of crashing the entire system, it only crashes the apps that were using it.
Restarting the app is usually far easier than restarting the entire computer. Eventually, they will be permanently damaged if you overheat them.
