I actually died a few times just to awe at them. Now, I never look at things like this and compare them to their source material.
Saw was nail biting, stomach churning, and frankly, brilliantly written most of the time. I hate to break it to you, but the worst facet of this game arrives in a story that no one could really care for. The twist at the end is, at best, a farce. My wife could barely pay attention to the plot as I was forgetting huge portions of it as it slipped through my finger. It never boils to a point of seat edging terror, but more so resembles a sacrificial lamb being beaten at a childrens party, pointless and upsetting, and not in a good way.
Overall, this game offers nothing more then 5 hours of "ehh's" and "pfff's" from a disengaged audience, and truely makes no apologies for it. In fact, the game seems to enjoy being this mean to a group of people who just wanted some fun at the expense of one of our generations best ip's. I might be the first person ever to be happy to hear the words "Game Over". Log In Sign Up.
Or at least it has been since Jigsaw made his bloody debut five years ago. Five continually worse sequels later and Jigsaw has finally found his way to the gaming world.
The films are known for clever traps, suspense, and myriad plot twists, all of which should translate extremely well to the virtual world. However, as a game based off a not-so-good, torture-porn movie franchise, SAW has a few hurdles to overcome.
So how does SAW fare as a video game? Find out in my review. Like any good horror game, SAW provides us with a very creepy world to explore. The asylum's dark past of medieval tactics and patient abuse plays a big role in the game's creepy atmosphere, and there's a constant feeling of being watched, because you are in fact being monitored by Amanda Young Tapp's apprentice. The asylum provides a decent variety of areas to explore, including a morgue, crematorium, theaters, libraries, offices, and a handful of other areas that all have an eroded, abandoned look, since the asylum hasn't been active for some time.
There aren't very many characters to interact with; other than Jigsaw and Amanda, there are six other characters Tapp must save throughout the game. Unsurprisingly, each character has a reason for why they've been placed in one of Jigsaw's traps, ranging from a corrupt CSI who framed an innocent person for a hit and run he committed to the journalist who coined the name "Jigsaw Killer" and framed Tapp for the murders.
The story feels held down by the fact that you're stuck in one area, with limited characters, each of which provides some back-story. Unfortunately, the character models are uninspired, making them more than a little difficult to care about, and this is a problem since you're tasked with saving them from Jigsaw's traps. Generic character models aside, the environments look really creepy. It would've been nice to be less confined since the game is completely linear.
I'm not saying the game needs to let us explore every nook and cranny like Batman: Arkham Asylum, but being able to explore a bit would've helped make it feel less claustrophobic. It is pretty atmospheric game. It is also refreshing to see that it is not only an action game as Resident Evil is turning into, and as dead space is great game though , but that there is lot of puzzles and riddles to solve. Story line is pretty solid too and it is connected to the movies. Worst part of the game, in my opinion is the repetitiveness, and bad fighting mechanics.
If developers used a little more time in completing these two obvious faults, this game could gate a 9 or straight Rent it. Don't buy it. It's too short and has little replay value. It's a bit formula how you make your way around. Essentially there are about 5 different kinds of puzzles, and once in a while there is a main puzzle which is quite different.
The combat is majorly flawed, but you are fighting very often, the challenge is the puzzles. A game like this should be hard to navigate based on the size of the asylum, but Jigsaw often seals the doors behind you until you finish what you need to finish in a room before leaving, which is good. SAW pervades us with a creepy atmosphere with the shattered interiors of Whitehurst asylum giving the game its scary and lonely elements.
Unfortunately the combat seems like an afterthought, with detective swinging fists as though he was under water. The characters are dire and don't contribute anything meaningful to the narrative.
The AI is also shoddy, not recognising traps that are set and generally aren't a challenge. Not a bad rental, but one that when completed, you'll never want to return to.
Really I can't find anything positive to say about this game. It's almost like it was made out of a joke, just to cash in off of the Wow, Saw. It's almost like it was made out of a joke, just to cash in off of the Saw movies name, which I've yet to figure out why there are so many of. The game consists of repetitive and annoying puzzles and traps that instantly kill you around every corner. Cheap way to make a short game take 7 hours to complete, right? The voice acting isn't the worst I've heard, but it is pretty bad.
Sometimes it's hard to tell if voice acting will be bad if the dialog sucks.
