I noticed that the wireless nic on the laptop was getting it's IP from the DHCP running on the Windows domain controller and it was not getting a configured Default Gateway IP, so the laptop couldn't find a route to the internet. Monday, February 8, PM. I too had the very similar problem Unidentified Network with local access starting yesterday, however am not sure whether it is exactly the same problem being discussed here.
For me even though the wifi status showed local access, I was not able to ping the router or access any other machine on the network. Today I noticed, that my wifi interface was properly able to receive an ip via dhcp I changed the start-ip on the router to verify that , however still it was not able to access any local or internet resources.
It seemed somehow after obtaining the ip via dhcp everything stopped working. I looked for erroneous logs in the Event Viewer, and there were none! And magically everything now has started working. I don't remember how I have the intel wireless tools or whether it came with the wireless drivers, but somehow it magically resolved my problem. I hope Microsoft stops all these magic tricks and make our life easy. Hope this helps someone. Proposed as answer by feralik Wednesday, March 17, PM.

I have one road user who is in office this week and is running vista. Whenever he attempts to connect to either the Wireless or Wired network, it shows up as "Local Only" and unidentified network.
Somethings I have tried: 1. Removed the wireless network from the list in the wireless network manager 2. Created the network from scratch from the network manager 4. Told vista to add the network to list after connecting after deleting 3. Disabled IPv6 5. Maybe it could have something to do with an issue like that.
I don't know. But thought I would put it out there just in case. Thanks for the tip. I usually go to a local Starbucks or some other cafe and I'd really be surprised if the barista would know how to do what you suggested. Thanks again.
Here's a simle solution that I just decided to try on my own because nothing else worked but this had instant results.
I feel it will help you too. I am having the exact same problem with my Dell XPS The wi-fi network works fine for my XP computers, but will only allow local access for the Dell. Dell support could only recommend re-installing the software to return it to factory condition.
I did this and it did work, but 3 months later, I am in the same situation. It has nothing to do with the wireless network because when I directly connect to the modem with ethernet, I get the same Local Access problem.
I am searching for a solution DavidLevy 2 Iron. Source: Dhcp-client Error I have discovered mentions to Dell Connection manager as a source of the problem, but couldn't find it when I searched the forum before writing this post.
Any advice? PudgyOne 8 Krypton. Also update the drivers from I am a Dell user, just like you are.
