The Play's The Thing Project. Written by director Alan Clarke and Arthur Ellis, their collective approach to the issues of drug use is one that is radically different from one most viewers will be accustomed to. The titular character played by Vicky Murdock is a young teenage girl with an obviously sympathetic and caring nature but also a debilitating drug habit.

As Clarke trails her with his trademark and groundbreaking use of Steadicam we observe not the drama of addiction, nor the glamourisation some films carelessly and reprehensibly assign to the subject matter, but the sheer mundanity of a life that relies on one fix after another.

This could've been better. I just didn't get much out of anything. The acting was pretty good, the writing was fine, just didn't do it for me. On the surface, a social commentary about the dissolution of the younger generation. But it's also about tracking shots, bad fashion and bad wallpaper, bad interior design and tragic urban planning, the unspiritualness of flat landscapes, the soul-crushing anonymity of suburban brick architecture, afternoon culture, asexuality, television as an aural phenomenon, the consequences of colonialism, and total freedom's inevitable concomitant: utter desolation.

The least "drug movie" drug movie ever made. Never exciting nor tragic, a lazier writer might link the resistance to any action as speaking towards the vitality drained by heroin, the drug of choice here.

But mapping any politics or point onto Clarke's vision seems corny and reductive. These are things that are present in Clarke's film, yet doesn't speak of them. What one may perceive as documentary aimlessness gives way to a discovery of the surrounding environment.

His aesthetic of walking is as…. One of the greatest films of the s. The difference between this pristine HD copy and the shoddy YouTube version I had seen before is significant and reveals the film to be even greater than originally estimated though I considered it a masterpiece before.

I'll let you know how it goes. I'm very excited. Letterboxd is an independent service created by a small team, and we rely mostly on the support of our members to maintain our site and apps.
